Innovation was key in this unusual hybrid project in scenic Batemans Bay. Using a novel blend of microtunnelling and HDD for the two water pipeline road crossings, several advantages of each trenchless method were combined for a highly successful outcome.

By incorporating a straight profile and >1 degree grade, the bores were able to be steered with exceptionally high accuracy and minimal borehole separation. The design and methodology also allowed for a very low final ream/product pipe size ratio, providing a genuine alternative to the traditionally higher cost of conventional microtunneling.

FPS provided detailed profile and alignments profile and alignments and specialist engineering for the project, incorporating the unusual methodology and also taking into account the requirements of a future road expansion project planned for the same location. Contractor UEA brought the designs into reality in October 2021, successfully delivering the crossings and illustrating the adaptable, innovative possibilities of trenchless in practice.
