Communicating trenchless project methodologies can be a challenge. Most activities are completed underground and out of view, and some project stakeholders, such as clients and the wider community, may not be fully familiar with how HDD works.

To solve this problem, our Engineering Team has been working on a new addition to our trenchless design range, which we are proud to present: the Execution Summary.

In its simplest form, the Execution Summary is a logical, straightforward representation of the project methodology in pictorial form. It illustrates each step of the methodology in a drawing, including the processes and equipment required to complete each step.

The process to develop an Execution Summary is as follows:

  1. Our team of HDD specialists consider the project inputs, including the HDD Profile and Alignment, Site Layouts, environmental constraints, proposed equipment, geotechnical conditions, and other relevant information.
  2. Using this information, a detailed assessment is completed to determine an optimal project methodology.
  3. From this, a series of drawings for each stage of the methodology, in chronological order, is produced. Depending on the project, drawings of steps may include the following:
    • Surface casing (also known as conductor casing) installation via hammer or wash over methods
    • Establishment of entry and exit sites
    • Pilot drilling and borehole enlarging reaming passes
    • Supplementary passes, including drill pipe tripping and borehole conditioning
    • Marine interface operations
    • Product pipe welding
    • Product pipe installation
    • Testing, pigging, and gauging.
  1. The Execution Summary is complete, providing a one-stop, visual representation of the project methodology from start to finish.

The Execution Summary can be used as a key project communication document, as it can be easily understood not only by project personnel, but also by stakeholders such as clients, subcontractors, and the wider community. It can be a particularly great tool for use in stakeholder consultation and communication, or for use in expressions of interest or tenders.

However, the Execution Summary is not just a key communication tool. It can also be used to optimise the planning and completion of the wider project, such as:

  • Project schedule: using the Execution Summary as a guide, project teams can effectively and efficiently produce the project schedule, including rate of completion, task durations and rate of penetration
  • Project cost estimation and budget: the Execution Summary can be used as an informing document for completing cost estimation and producing the project budget in a step-by-step, logical way
  • Bottom hole assembly summary: by first determining the size and function of passes via the Execution Summary, the BHA summary can be completed for each stage of the methodology with confidence.

Having the Execution Summary as an easily understood, consistent, and straightforward methodology plan to work from in the remainder of the project can thus open up major efficiencies in trenchless project planning and management.
